According to recent research glaciers are at risk due to increase in heat and climate change. According to a report 40% of glaciers are already doomed due to excess heat and global warming. This percentage can increase more if global warming continues.

Melting of glaciers: According to reports from 2021-2024 two thirds of glaciers are doomed and there is more risk if the warming of Earth continues.

Hindu kash Himalaya can lose large amounts of glaciers if warming continues and it can risk thousands of People. Glaciers are melting rapidly as compared to history and it’s a danger to many species who depend on it.

World glacier conference: This year Tajikistan hosted a world glacier conference in which the importance of glaciers was highlighted. The guests said that glaciers are doomed rapidly in recent six years as compared to history and it’s raising threads for many species who depend on glaciers.

The President of Tajikistan said this issue needs world attention so that immediate steps should be taken to protect glaciers. In recent times Nepal declared the loss of a glacier called langtang’s yala glacier.

The Tajikistan president said that glacier melting is a serious matter and steps should be taken to address this issue. According to reports almost 26% of glaciers in Tajikistan are doomed. This conference was attended by many country’s presidents and prime ministers including Pakistan’s Prime Minister and world health organisation officials.

How glacier is affecting life of people : Many people depend on glaciers for their irrigation and drinking. Farmers depend on water to grow their crops and also people who live in villages depend on glaciers. Countries like India where large numbers of farmers depend on glaciers for irrigation.

Switzerland also depends on glaciers where farmers use melting water of glaciers for irrigation. Resources from glaciers are also helpful in hydropower projects such as generating electricity. Glaciers are also a tourist attraction through which it’s playing a key role in tourism.

Melting of glaciers can result in

● Floods and storms

● It can also cause infrastructure damage and also can result in loss of life’s

● It can also decrease ocean life and a risk for many species

● Glaciers melting can also increase global warming and change in climate

Many glaciers in India and US are at risk and according to reports if steps won’t be taken these glaciers will disappear that can result in floods and change in climate. The world glacier conference was attended by nearly 80 United Nations members.

The delegation from the United Nations emphasized glacier protection to safe species and people whose lives depend on this. Prime Minister of Pakistan shehbaz sharif mentioned 2022 floods and its effects on Pakistan economy and people.

“ Water plays a key role in our economy and irrigation” Shehbaz Sharif Shehbaz Sharif said all rivers of Pakistan depend on glacier stability and many people’s work depends on it.

Prevention and steps:

Melting of glaciers can also destroy infrastructure so these steps can be taken to prevent melting of glaciers:

● Stop using fossil fuels as harmful smoke can result in melting of glaciers

● Limit tourism near glacier areas to protect glaciers from melting

● Reduce emission of carbon from industries to protect glaciers and environment

Glaciers play a key role in any country’s tourism and also irrigation. Many species’ life depends on glaciers.
